The tube, train and drive to work everyday… let’s face it, it’s not exactly the most joyous part of the day – especially if you’re fighting your way through crowds/traffic jams of other people trying to get from A to B on time and your personal space is invaded by blank faces and the occasional sweaty armpit lol! Most people find it stressful. Me too!
I can’t tell you how many people have brought this up in my therapy sessions! For example – “Even though I am not doing anything physically demanding on my commute, I still feel totally wiped out by the time I get to work!” or “If I am around restless crowds of people, I get so drained and tired!”… these are classic comments (along these lines of thought) that come up… and it really made me start to wonder about it and how I too was affected sometimes!
It’s not something we can avoid… for most of us, it is a part of our lives that we need to go through, so I thought it was also time to share some tips to make that daily journey a little more interesting and energising!
Tips To Make Your Commute More Uplifting!
♦ Rise & Shine… Morning Time!
I’ve come to realise one thing that has become a little rule for me now – “Your morning sets the tone/energy of your day.”
I really believe that. It’s almost like, you can have the exact same day with the same stress factors thrown in – but if I have taken the time to set a positive morning routine, the way I react to every situation is so much more productive and calmer!
So make your morning routine a positive one before you face the madness of the rush hour lol… A few tips:
- Set your alarm clock 10-30 mins earlier – Stay in bed if you like and use this time to breathe deeply, say your affirmations and notice any negative thoughts that come up being released through your breath.
- Shower time – Sprinkle a few uplifting essential oils (lemongrass, orange etc) in a hot shower floor and breathe deeply. Again, use this time to notice your thoughts, release and set your intentions for the day.
- Bless your doorway – Make a sign with a positive affirmation or a visual reminder so that you are blessing your day ahead with love, flow and energy protection.
♦ Give your Self enough time to travel!
Give your Self plenty of time to get to where you need to be – it makes all the difference when you are no longer stressing about being late! And if you’re feeling adventurous, maybe take a few different travel journeys to work each day, instead of sticking to the usual routine.
♦ Energy protection!
Many people are sensitive to other people’s energy… even on a deep subconscious level. And if we are put in a room or space with a crowd of anxious busy commuters rushing around, it can be a draining experience when you’re picking up on all these stressful energies!
Energy protection is about making sure that you maintain a healthy barrier between how you, your energy and the external energy sources interact with each other.
A simple tip: White Light Meditation (tune in!). I do this very often during the day and in the morning, visualising that I have a white light energy barrier around me while I’m working my way through the crowds of commuters.
I also take my attention to the weight of my feet and body on the ground as I walk, syncing my breath with my feet if I can – this is very grounding and helps with the process of staying in the moment, here and NOW (instead of being in our mind, worrying or focusing on things that are in the past/future).
♦ Replace your coffee!
With a chain store coffee shop at every corner these days, it’s so tempting to fuel our Self with coffee during our commute. It has almost become second nature to a lot of us to get our usual coffee fix at some point before/during/after our commute.
So, instead, why not try replacing this with a healthy alternative? One that will give you a much longer lasting energy boost than your caffeine fix….
Solution? Green homemade smoothies and juices rock lol! You don’t have to be an expert in making them (quick google searches will show you recipes and websites dedicated to making them) and you don’t need any expensive juicing equipment (although you could treat yourself!)… To be honest, my fairly cheap blender and nut bag make amazing juices! Maybe you could try making some at night before your work day ahead, store it in the fridge and bottle it up for your journey in the morning…. an easy way to get your 5-a-day and still go about your daily routine!
♦ Meditations on the go!
If you’re not driving (or concentrating on anything) and simply sitting on a train/bus for your commute, try downloading a few meditations that you can try on your way to work and back – put your earphones on and away you go!
♦ Music sets the mood!
Whether you’re on the train or driving, music is an amazing tool to get the good-feeling energy flowing! Use this time to explore your creative side and stock up on some new artists/music that you can breathe deeply too.
♦ Inspiring talks!
One of the many wonderful things about this age of information and creativity is the vast amount of inspiring talks out there (think of TED talks etc)… Ideas are being shared and people are now more open than ever before to tuning in and being inspired! While you have space and time during your day on your commute journey, you could perhaps use this space to download a few talks and inspirational seminars to enlighten your day!
♦ A time to catch up on some inspiring books!
Just like the previous 2 tips, use this space to enjoy new books and soak up all the amazing written material floating around.
